I graduated high school to the anthemic sounds from the movie The Breakfast Club. The song was British rock group Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me).” If you know the song, you know it’s not possible to forget the song. Those La’s – those LaLaLaLaaaa’s – are not going away. Neither are the Hey-Hey-Hey He-ey’s or the Oooooooh-ohhhhh’s. The song’s all set. It’s the rest of us wondering if we’ve left a memorable chord.

At President Bush’s funeral, former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney told a story from a visit he and his wife made to Walker Point in Kennebunkport, Maine over Labor Day weekend, 2001. They were visiting George and Barbara Bush, whose love of family and precious surroundings caused him to reflect on the nature of his friends and of friendship.

I suppose the hawk is a celebrity of sorts around the yard.  It has presence. It barely has to move, and I’m moved…starstruck, wondering what it sees and what it’s going to do. It looks down, it looks left, and right. I want to know what gets its attention. Is it a mouse in the field below? A bird? Does it see an egg it wants? What is it thinking?
